“Campbell County mother on a mission to educate parents about child abuse”
A Campbell County mother is trying to raise awareness about child abuse. She says her daughter is now blind and paralyzed because of injuries from a babysitter.
Juliana Thaxton suffers from what’s known as Shaken Baby Syndrome.
“She’s blind. She can’t walk anymore. She can’t hold her head up. She can’t eat on her own,” said Joleen Thaxton, Juliana’s mother.
In January, Thaxton says her daughter was healthy and normal. But a few days later, everything changed.
“I got a call from the babysitter’s husband saying that I had to get to their house quickly, that my daughter wasn’t breathing and was not responding,” said Thaxton.
Juliana was taken to UVA, where doctors discovered a severe brain injury.
“It was at UVA, after they did an MRI, that we learned about Shaken Baby Syndrome,” said Thaxton.
Thaxton believes it was her daughter’s caretaker, someone she trusted, who not only shook her child, but caused an injury so devastating, her daughter may not live past the age of 10.
