They called him a gladiator — locked in the fight of his life. For his life.
A battle to breathe in. To breathe out.
To take in enough sustenance and medicine to carry his little broken body over one hour to the next.
To love and be loved in great and elemental ways.
On Friday, worn out with the effort, Jared Patton finally lost that battle.
He died in the arms of his doting grandmother, his “Nina,” Kathy Stowe.
He was 3 years old.

Imagine there’s a sick serial killer out there, targeting infants.
He batters their fragile heads mercilessly. One in four of them die within hours or days. The rest are so badly brain-damaged they may linger for a few years, but are little more than vegetables.
Imagine that last year he killed two babies in Newport News and another in Virginia Beach. And left more dead and disabled infants in his wake throughout the state.
Imagine that last week he struck again, killing an 11-month-old girl in Hampton.
Here at Shaken Baby Syndrome of Virginia, Inc., our initiative is to reach out to the community through education and awareness of SBS. Our trainers conduct seminars of all sizes in order to provide parents with valuable information on what to do when a baby cries, as well as the consequences of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). We are an organization inspired by the co-founders' journey with their grandson, Jared Nicolas. Jared suffered severe brain damage at just six weeks of age and fought for his life until his tragic death on December 11, 2009.
