Steve and Kathy Stowe’s grandson Jared Patton was once in perfect health but at 6 months old his mother noticed that something wasn’t right. He was rushed to the ER and then airlifted to the Medical College of Virginia. He was placed on a ventilator, put into a coma and the blood to his brain was cut off.
The authorities were called and questioned Jared’s parents. Jared’s father, David Patton, was charged and convicted of child abuse and sentenced to 7 years in prison with 13 years of probation after his release.

Here at Shaken Baby Syndrome of Virginia, Inc., our initiative is to reach out to the community through education and awareness of SBS. Our trainers conduct seminars of all sizes in order to provide parents with valuable information on what to do when a baby cries, as well as the consequences of Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). We are an organization inspired by the co-founders' journey with their grandson, Jared Nicolas. Jared suffered severe brain damage at just six weeks of age and fought for his life until his tragic death on December 11, 2009.
